Tracemark allows jewelry companies to guarantee the traceability of jewelry and diamonds in order to avoid bad practices.

A report which condemned the violation of human rights in the jewelry supply chain raised the concern of Berta Serret and her father, Josep Miquel Serret, executive director of the jewelry firm Facet. “It’s a very opaque industry, one in which over a million children still work in gold mines – a mineral that at the same time is responsible for 30% of the toxic mercury which pollutes our oceans” says Berta Serret. “It’s not very well known, but the jewelry industry is one of the biggest polluters on the planet.” She adds.

“After seeing the report, we couldn’t simply just sit back so we got to work on a system we could use to track and trace the story behind each piece of jewelry” explains the entrepreneur. The project started in August 2019 and Tracemark’s launch came in September of this year, after an investment of €600,000.

“Certifying the traceability of a piece of jewelry is very complex. Other companies have tried to do it, but they’ve got stuck half way through” says Josep Miquel Serret.

They assure that Tracemark is the first, and only, platform in the world able to provide complete traceability of jewelry. “We want to be the first, but not the only, because our primary goal is to change the jewelry industry to improve the world we live in” the Facet owner says.

“It’s a guarantee that’s for, on the one hand, manufacturers who can access information about the materials that they buy. On the other hand, it is also a guarantee for the final consumer, who can trace the unique story behind the piece that they have purchased or are about to purchase through a QR code” explains Andrea M. Balletbó, Business Development at Tracemark.

Furthermore, Josep Miquel Serret highlights that the software guarantees the confidentiality of any information provided by the different companies in the supply chain.

Brands such as Tous, Messika or Facet are already trusting in Tracemark’s services, and the company is in conversation with other brands. The business model consists of a maximum commission of between 1 and 2 percent per piece. While the solution was only launched recently, they aim to end 2021 with revenues of €1.5 million.

Tracemark is led by Berta Serret, employing three people currently. Although the company was founded in Catalonia, a few weeks ago its base was moved to Córdoba for operational reasons.
